In No Man's Sky, an expedition can become a very elaborate shopping trip. You set out for milestones, find equipment worth keeping, then reach the part where the game expects you to understand what goes home. Before pressing the button that ends the journey, visit the expedition terminal and make that decision deliberately.
This guide covers the expedition route started from an existing save. It follows the system Hello Games introduced with the Omega update on February 15, 2024: take selected provisions into an expedition, use familiar equipment and bring loot back to your primary game. It is not a promise that an expedition is available today. Check the in-game listing and Hello Games' current news for the event and its deadline.
Choose the save you want to return to
Start by loading the primary save you intend to continue using. Hello Games added an expedition terminal aboard the Space Anomaly for this route. Starting a separate new game remains another option, but the terminal workflow below concerns the expedition attached to your existing save.
Before committing, identify that save for yourself: its name, your current ship and the project you were working on. That small check is especially useful if your save list contains several similarly named adventures. “Probably the right one” is an ambitious filing system for an entire galaxy.
Read the event's own instructions as well. A general transfer guide cannot tell you which current milestones matter or how much time remains. Treat those as a second checklist alongside the cargo decisions here.
Pack for the handoff, not the opening minute
The terminal accepts selected items and packaged equipment before departure. Hello Games' expedition-structure notes explain the catch: you retrieve those provisions after reaching the Space Anomaly during the expedition. They are not an instant delivery to your starting location.
Make a short packing note with two columns: what you deposited and what you expect each item to help with. If your opening plan depends entirely on that cargo, revise the plan around the retrieval point. Preparing a useful package and assuming it is already in your pocket are different things.
Sean Murray's Omega announcement also describes bringing favourite starships and custom Multi-Tools into the expedition. Check the terminal's equipment options and read the current prompts before building your plan around a particular loadout. Equipment choices deserve the same attention as the cargo grid.

Taking a break does not mean finishing
The expedition terminal and a main-menu option let you pause an expedition and switch back to its primary save. You can then resume the expedition. Completion is a separate action with a separate purpose.
If you only want to work on your usual save for a while, look for the return or pause option and read its description. Do not select an ending action merely because both choices appear to get you back home. Decide what you mean to do before choosing the button.
Our practical rule: say the intended action plainly. “I want a break” calls for one check. “I am finished and have prepared my return cargo” calls for another. The interface should confirm your intention, not supply it.
Do a cargo pass before the ending action
At completion, the terminal can return items and technology to the primary save. Unwanted items are instead converted into units or nanites as appropriate. Earned units, nanites and quicksilver return automatically on completion. Keeping a particular item therefore deserves a different check from keeping its converted value.
- List the things you actually want to keep. Use item names rather than a vague reminder to “bring the good stuff.”
- Compare that list with the terminal's return selection. Read the item descriptions and current transfer prompts.
- Read the completion confirmation last. Make sure you are ready to end the expedition, rather than briefly return to your primary game.
This is a packing workflow, not an item-value ranking. Choose according to what you want to do next on your primary save. A resource you need for a planned project may matter more to you than another pile selected simply because its icon looks expensive.
Read old expedition pages as dated instructions
The Omega announcement remains useful evidence for the system's introduction. Its free-play weekend ran February 15–19, 2024. Old reward promotions and countdowns on that page are not current offers. Use the historical page to understand the design, then use the current game to confirm the available event and prompts.
