When shopping for Pokémon HeartGold Version or Pokémon SoulSilver Version, make the Pokéwalker a separate line on your contents list. A Game Card, its case and the little red-and-white accessory are different objects. A photograph of one does not summon the others into the package.
The original Pokéwalker has a specific relationship with these DS games. Before buying a bundle or reviving an old one, check what is included, which save it is linked to and whether the connection actually works. This guide focuses on that original accessory, rather than current price estimates or promises about finding every historical distribution.

Know what the original accessory does
Nintendo's January 2010 introduction describes transferring one Pokémon from HeartGold or SoulSilver to the pedometer through infrared. Walking earns Watts, which support the Poké Radar's Pokémon encounters and the Dowsing Machine's item search. Those finds can return to the DS adventure.
That makes the accessory worth considering for someone who wants this particular part of the games. Our recommendation is to decide whether you want to use it, display it alongside the game or rebuild a more complete original package. Each goal makes different missing pieces important. A working unit and an attractive box should be evaluated separately.
The announcement concerns the original release, not a promise about today's secondhand listings. Read the actual seller's contents. If the listing offers only the game, assume the Pokéwalker must be obtained separately unless it explicitly says otherwise.
The infrared connection belongs to the Game Card
The accessory operations manual identifies infrared communication between the Pokéwalker and the HeartGold or SoulSilver Game Card. Its original compatibility list names Nintendo DS, DS Lite and DSi hardware.
Keep the card in the conversation when asking for a demonstration. A powered-on pedometer by itself does not show the complete connection you want to use. Ask which game and handheld are being demonstrated, and whether you are seeing communication with that actual accessory.
Nintendo's HeartGold booklet starts registration from Connect to Pokéwalker, then Save, then go for a Stroll, selecting a Pokémon from a PC Box and a Route. It directs the infrared sensors to face each other within two inches. Follow the booklet's full sequence rather than treating a distant button press as a connection test.

A used Pokéwalker has a registration history
The HeartGold booklet says a Pokéwalker stores data for one person, and only one can be registered to a copy of HeartGold. It also says that the Pokémon taken on a stroll can return only to the registered Game Card.
That is a useful question before money changes hands: is the accessory still linked to somebody else's save? Do not treat a Pokémon visible on a secondhand unit as a promise that it can be moved into any game you bring. Establish the current arrangement and what the owner intends to preserve.
Nintendo provides a reset procedure for linking the Pokéwalker to a new save, with an explicit warning that the accessory's data is erased. A reset is a deliberate change of registration, not a harmless test button. Read that warning and settle existing data questions before following the procedure.
Inspect the cover and clip as separate pieces
The operations manual identifies a standard battery cover and a clip connector that replaces it for attachment to a belt. For a collector, our advice is to ask which back is fitted and which additional pieces are included. A front photograph cannot answer that.
Request a clear view of the back, its screw and the actual accessories being sold. If a particular original packaging piece matters to your collection, name it in the question. “Everything pictured” becomes useful only when the photograph shows the things you care about.
Check function and physical condition independently. Our Pokémon collecting guide covers the separate questions of cartridge authenticity and condition. A successful accessory connection is useful evidence about that operation, not a universal certificate for every object in a bundle.
Read the battery notes before opening it
Nintendo specifies a CR2032 battery, with its positive side facing outward. More significantly for an existing collection, the accessory manual says to send its contents to the Game Card before changing the battery: the Pokéwalker saves its information only once an hour. It also directs another infrared connection after replacement to restore the correct time.
Use the manual's complete replacement instructions, including its seal and cover checks. If the unit already contains progress you want, deal with the data first. Confirm the transfer to the intended Game Card before proceeding, then keep the replacement instructions beside the accessory until the job is complete.
