Horror has several ways to ruin a perfectly sensible evening. A monster can hunt you, a familiar room can stop making sense, or the next fishing spot can look just profitable enough to ignore the dark. This Top 25 ranks the PC games that give those fears something useful to do.
What qualifies, and what earns a higher place
This is an original Zypher editorial selection of 25 playable Windows PC games with horror or a substantial horror-adjacent identity. Survival horror, psychological horror, cooperative investigations and unsettling puzzle-platformers qualify. Early Access games qualify; Phasmophobia is currently labelled Early Access on Steam. We rank the named base games, not expansions or multiple editions of the same game. This is a curated field, not a claim that every horror release has been considered.
Our priorities are sustained tension, meaningful player decisions, atmosphere with a clear identity and the relationship between the story and what the player does. Vulnerability and uncertainty receive more weight than combat spectacle. That explains why a superb action-horror premise can finish below a quieter investigation. The order and tradeoffs are Zypher editorial judgment, not poll results, review-score averages or claimed DJ playtests.
Each entry links its publisher-supplied PC description. Console products are labelled separately, and their listings do not establish ownership of a PC copy. Check the exact edition, system requirements, account requirements and mature-content description before buying.

25. DEVOUR
Ritual tasks and a possessed pursuer give a group of one to four players a direct job under escalating pressure. Working through a ritual while the cultist grows more dangerous gives coordination a deadline. Its narrow, repeatable objective is also why it sits here: choose it for an online horror session, rather than a long authored mystery. Publisher PC reference.
24. The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan
Zypher store link: PS4 console edition. The ranking assesses the PC game.
A diving trip leads five friends aboard a ghost ship, with branching choices deciding who survives. Online play with a friend and an offline group option make it an inviting shared story. Passing the story between players gives those decisions a social cost; more mechanically demanding survival games place higher. The attraction is arguing about a choice before living with it. Publisher PC reference.
23. Outlast 2
Blake and Lynn Langermann's investigation takes the series to the Arizona wilderness and the community of Temple Gate. The change of setting gives this sequel a strong reason to exist beside the original. It is our pick for a different nightmare from the same universe, but the first game's enclosed investigative premise makes the sharper starting recommendation. Publisher PC reference.
22. INSIDE
A hunted boy and a sinister project provide the frame for this puzzle-platformer. It belongs under our broad definition of horror because unsettling discovery carries the journey. The appeal is concentrated visual storytelling and physical puzzles. Players who want to manage weapons, supplies or a party should look elsewhere in the ranking; those are not the reasons to choose INSIDE. Publisher PC reference.
21. Little Nightmares
Zypher store link: PS4 console edition. The ranking assesses the PC game.
Six's escape from the Maw makes enormous furniture and distorted adults into a child's obstacle course. Climbing, hiding and finding small routes give its scale a practical purpose. We place it here for that coherent perspective. The tradeoff is the kind of interaction: this is an escape and traversal pick, rather than a combat-led survival campaign. Publisher PC reference.
20. Alan Wake
Zypher store link: Xbox 360 console edition. The ranking assesses the PC game.
This entry concerns the PC release of the original Alan Wake, not Alan Wake Remastered. Its light-based combat and television-style mystery give the trip through Bright Falls two distinct attractions. It ranks well as an action-thriller invitation to horror. Readers seeking the sustained vulnerability of the leaders may prefer those games to a protagonist with more means to fight. Publisher PC reference.
19. Until Dawn
We mean the rebuilt PC version, not the original PS4 release. Decisions determine the fates of friends whose mountain retreat becomes a slasher nightmare. It earns this position by putting responsibility for the cast in the player's hands. Choose it when shaping a horror story sounds appealing; our higher placements reward more continuous resource and navigation decisions. Publisher PC reference.
18. DREDGE
Fishing, selling the catch and improving a boat would sound relaxing without the warning about the nighttime fog. We value how the next worthwhile discovery can compete with the wish to return safely. It is the gentler-looking invitation in this group, though the sinister setting is deliberate. Choose it for exploration with unease, rather than a constant chase. Publisher PC reference.

17. Little Nightmares II
Mono travels with Six through the Pale City, mixing hiding, pursuit and environmental cooperation. The companion gives the small-person-in-an-enormous-world premise another useful relationship. We place it above the first game for that expanded dramatic setup. Six is a character in this adventure; her presence should not be mistaken for a promise of a two-player cooperative mode. Publisher PC reference.
16. The Mortuary Assistant
Embalming work and identifying a demonic presence share the same shift. That combination makes ordinary procedure part of the threat, rather than a task to finish before the horror begins. It ranks for the specificity of its workplace. Its repeated-play story structure asks for a different commitment from a campaign intended to be understood in one straight run. Publisher PC reference.
15. Resident Evil Village
Zypher store link: Xbox Series X / Xbox One Gold Edition. The ranking assesses the PC game.
Ethan Winters returns in a first-person campaign set a few years after Resident Evil 7. We rank Village for the invitation to investigate a larger mystery while confronting its adversaries directly. It is a strong action-horror choice. Under this list's preference for sustained vulnerability, however, the tighter farmhouse premise of 7 takes the higher position. Publisher PC reference.
14. Visage
An evolving house, environmental clues and a defenseless protagonist give Visage its psychological-horror identity. Its own listing emphasizes a slow build and unconventional difficulty, which is useful buying information. We reward the commitment to investigating a hostile domestic space. The same deliberate pace makes it a less immediate recommendation for someone seeking a clearly signposted evening of action. Publisher PC reference.
13. Phasmophobia
Evidence gathering gives up to four online investigators a shared question to answer. Equipment such as EMF readers and Spirit Boxes makes paying attention part of the job. It is our highest cooperative pick because the investigation itself is the attraction. Group play also changes the mood: coordinating friends is a different pleasure from carrying a solitary story's tension. Publisher PC reference.
12. Outlast
Miles Upshur investigates Mount Massive Asylum without the ability to fight his way out. Running, hiding and navigating the facility make survival an active task. We rank the original above its sequel for the clarity of that setup. Its limitation is equally clear: players who want to recover control by building a combat loadout should choose a different kind of horror. Publisher PC reference.
11. Resident Evil HD Remaster
The HD remaster of Resident Evil combines the mansion setting with scarce supplies and a choice of original or alternate controls. Its place comes from asking players to understand a hostile building while managing what they have. This is a deliberate recommendation for that older design lineage, not a claim that its presentation or controls suit everyone equally. Publisher PC reference.
10. Darkwood
Exploring and scavenging by day feeds preparation for nights inside a vulnerable hideout. That daily structure makes the forest threatening before anything reaches the door. We rank it highly because preparation has an obvious purpose and a deadline. Its listing explicitly warns about limited guidance, so choose it with an appetite for learning through observation and experimentation. Publisher PC reference.
9. Resident Evil 4 (2023 remake)
Zypher store link: Xbox Series X console edition. The ranking assesses the PC game.
This placement is for the 2023 remake. Leon's rescue mission in a European village gives action and horror a clear shared direction. It earns a high position for making confrontation part of the invitation instead of a last resort. Our leaders sit above it because this particular ranking values helplessness and uncertainty more heavily than the satisfaction of meeting danger head-on. Publisher PC reference.
8. Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Daniel's incomplete memories turn exploration of a castle into an investigation of himself. Hiding, running and physical interaction give him things to do without making combat the answer. That relationship between hands, hiding places and physical objects is its strongest argument here. Its narrow means of defense are a commitment: bringing the right expectations matters more than expecting a weapon upgrade to change the mood. Publisher PC reference.

7. SIGNALIS
Elster's search joins scarce resources, riddles and a science-fiction story about identity and memory. We place it this high because those concerns belong together: investigating the world and surviving it are both central. The tradeoff is interpretive appetite. Choose it because an enigmatic cosmic mystery sounds compelling, rather than because you want every discovery to resolve into a tidy explanation. Publisher PC reference.
6. Dead Space (2023 remake)
This is the 2023 remake. Engineer Isaac Clarke investigates the USG Ishimura while repurposing and upgrading tools against its creatures. The connection between setting, occupation and survival is unusually clear: the engineer’s tools belong in the place he has to survive. It is our strongest recommendation here for armed science-fiction horror, while the games above it give greater weight to uncertainty or more restricted control. Publisher PC reference.
5. Resident Evil 7 biohazard
Zypher store link: PS4 console edition. The ranking assesses the PC game.
The first-person farmhouse setting puts exploration and immediate proximity at the center of this entry. Our ranking favors that contained premise: an ordinary kind of building becomes somewhere the player must read carefully. It places above Village because concentration matters more than breadth under our criteria. The first-person viewpoint is also a preference to consider before buying either. Publisher PC reference.
4. Amnesia: The Bunker
A World War I bunker, scarce tools and a monster that responds to player actions make experimentation dangerous. Its semi-open structure and multiple solutions earn the highest Amnesia placement: a plan can matter even when the creature refuses to cooperate. The compromise is pressure. This is a recommendation for improvising under threat, rather than leisurely working through an atmospheric puzzle. Publisher PC reference.
3. Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake)
Zypher store link: PS4 console edition. The ranking assesses the PC game.
The 2019 remake puts Leon and Claire into separate playable campaigns with an over-the-shoulder viewpoint. Exploration, puzzles, limited resources and combat make it our best-balanced survival-horror recommendation. It stops short of the top because we give the next two games a stronger atmospheric identity. For players who want several kinds of decisions in one campaign, this is the starting point. Publisher PC reference.
2. Alien: Isolation
Zypher store link: PS3 Nostromo Edition. The ranking assesses the PC game.
Amanda Ripley's search brings her to Sevastopol, where scavenging and crafting support survival against a reactive Alien. We rank it second because the pursuer makes observing a place feel urgent. The limitation is the premise itself: being underpowered is the attraction, so anyone seeking a straightforward Alien shooting gallery should read the survival emphasis carefully before buying. Publisher PC reference.
1. SOMA
An underwater facility and machines that believe they are people turn questions of identity into the main horror. You investigate terminals, documents and inhabitants while dealing with threats you cannot fight directly. It wins because our criteria reward a setting and story that give fear a specific subject. The tradeoff is that emphasis: choose SOMA for disturbing questions and investigation, not combat mastery. Publisher PC reference.

Choose your kind of bad idea
For shared investigation, begin with Phasmophobia. For a combat-led campaign, examine the Dead Space and Resident Evil entries. For a slower encounter with a disturbing place, read SOMA and Visage carefully. A high rank is useful only when the experience sounds like one you actually want.
