No Man's Sky can turn a plan to explore one planet into a project involving alien genetics, a hungry spacecraft and a synthesizer. The useful surprise is how many different hobbies fit inside the same game.
Here are exactly ten checkable facts about its stranger systems. These features arrived across earlier updates; this is an original evergreen look at what they let you do, not a claim that ten new features launched today. Install the applicable current game updates before looking for later additions on an older copy.

1. You can grow a starship
Hello Games' Living Ship notes describe biological spacecraft with their own organic technology. The Starbirth mission series and the Void Egg are the route into incubating, growing and eventually flying one. These ships come in procedurally generated variations.
That makes the appeal more specific than another paint job. A different kind of vessel gets a different origin and equipment identity. The shopping question becomes wonderfully strange: would you rather buy a spacecraft or participate in its development as an organism?
2. An organic frigate's food can change its abilities
The living fleet goes beyond the ship you pilot. The Endurance update introduced organic frigates and lets players feed them cooked food through Fleet Management. Feeding can adjust a frigate's mood and produce new abilities or traits.
Zypher's read: it gives fleet management a memorable extra question. The vessel has capabilities to consider and a meal to choose. An ordinary equipment checklist rarely needs a dinner section, but this one has earned it. Do not confuse these fleet vessels with the living starships in the first fact.
3. Companion eggs can become genetic experiments
The Companions notes describe well-cared-for creatures laying eggs and offspring related to, but different from, their parents. Take an egg to the Space Anomaly's Egg Sequencer and you can alter its genetic material. Hello Games specifically warns that overdosing can cause dramatic reconfiguration.
The interesting distinction is between finding an animal and influencing what hatches next. This is a project for players who enjoy the creature side of exploration. Simply collecting a companion and deliberately experimenting with an egg are different goals.

4. ByteBeat is a music-making tool inside the game
In its December 2019 ByteBeat announcement, Hello Games explained a device that generates procedural music once built and powered. Its sequencer lets players change melody and drums, with controls for elements such as key, octave and tempo. Multiple devices can be synchronized for layered arrangements.
That is a much more involved proposition than selecting background music. It gives a base another creative purpose: making something to hear. A building project can become a music project before you have finished deciding where the entrance belongs.
5. There is an alien cooking critic
The Beyond update introduced cooking with plant and animal ingredients in a Nutrient Processor. It also gave players somewhere to take the results: Iteration Cronus aboard the Space Anomaly can judge prepared food, with potential rewards.
Our take is that the critic makes the crafting detour more entertaining. You can approach ingredients as another collection task, or turn a session into a culinary experiment and take the result for judgment. Exploring an alien world apparently does not exempt anyone from having their cooking evaluated.
6. Fishing depends on more than choosing a pretty shore
Hello Games' Aquarius notes explain that different catches depend on planet, time, weather and water depth. Specialist bait attracts particular fish, and edible items can also serve as bait. The game records catches and weight records in its fishing catalogue.
For a player looking for a particular catch, that gives the search several variables to examine. A scenic spot is a fine choice for relaxing. Completing a collection asks a more deliberate question about the conditions. Your fishing trip can be peaceful and still have homework.

7. The landscape is editable
Atlas Rises introduced a terrain-editing Multi-Tool enhancement for adding and removing ground, with different shapes and sizes. Synthesis later added Restore and Flatten modes to the Terrain Manipulator.
This is a separate creative task from placing a structure. The surface around a build becomes part of the plan. If shaping the setting appeals more than adding another room, investigate the tool's modes and choose the change you intend to make.
8. A portal address can be shared with another player
The Atlas Rises portal explanation describes entering a particular glyph combination to travel to a particular planet. Sharing that combination gives other players a way to visit the destination. When sharing bases, Hello Games has also asked creators to include the current galaxy alongside portal coordinates. Keep that context with the address.
That changes a discovery from something you can describe into somewhere another Traveller can seek out. The useful object is the address. It is a different kind of souvenir from a screenshot, and a good reason to record a destination carefully when you want someone else to find it.

9. Your Minotaur can follow you without you piloting it
The Sentinel update added Minotaur AI Pilot technology. With it active while the player is on foot, the Exomech attempts to follow and assist in combat. Entering its cockpit gives control back to the player.
The difference is the mech's role. A vehicle you drive and an accompanying ally ask different things of your attention. For players interested in exploring on foot, the technology gives the Minotaur a job beyond waiting for the next time someone climbs in.
10. Salvaged ship components can become a custom starship
Orbital's fabrication system lets players recover specific components while salvaging ships, then combine harvested parts into a new vessel. Its introduction covered fighter, hauler and explorer designs, with reactors affecting class and stats and choices for paint and finish.
That creates a collecting project around parts you want to use together. It is worth keeping the scope clear: this describes the fabrication system introduced in Orbital, not a promise that every ship in the game can be dismantled and rebuilt in the same way.
