SuperTuxKart Evolution is treating a familiar track like a design problem, not a paint job. In a September 30, 2026 development update, the open-source kart racer’s team showed how Candela City is being rebuilt around cleaner starts, more meaningful route choices and better opportunities to recover after a mistake. The result is a useful look at how a long-running racing game can modernize without sanding away the character players remember.

The official Candela City development post is a progress report, not a release announcement. SuperTuxKart Evolution remains in development, and the team has not attached a launch date to this track reveal. That distinction matters: the changes below are confirmed development work, while timing is still unannounced.

A rework built around the racing line

Candela City first arrived with SuperTuxKart 0.9.3 in 2017. Its night setting and broad central boulevard gave it a strong identity, but the developers say its sharp opening bend could create pileups and that the rest of a lap offered too little room for comebacks.

Evolution changes the route itself. A park that once sat beside the course now becomes a drivable section with three bends in place of one simple curve. A new road loops around a rebuilt triumphal arch, extending the course and adding elevation. The start line moves to the exit of that roundabout, where the field has more space before the first major contest for position.

The straight now asks a question

The boulevard remains the track’s signature, but item placement is being used to turn it into a decision. Gift boxes sit at crossings between the two sides, while nitro is distributed to encourage racers to move across the avenue and back. Pointed separators are intended to deflect a kart instead of producing a dead stop when a crossing goes wrong.

That is the most interesting part of the update. The team is not merely adding detail to an old environment. It is trying to reduce frustration while keeping enough risk to reward good lines, drift timing and situational choices. An optional jump near the gear roundabout follows the same idea: it can shorten the route and provide access to an item and nitro, but it requires a zipper to take successfully.

Night racing gets a technical upgrade

Candela City is also becoming more deliberately nocturnal. The sun has been replaced by a full moon, streetlights are brighter and the engine can allocate up to 128 point lights instead of 32. The developers say the additional lighting capacity supports a warmer, livelier boulevard without giving up the track’s night-time mood.

Other details serve play as much as presentation. Sidewalk edges are being adjusted so high-speed impacts are less likely to strand a kart. Invisible walls are being reduced where possible. The reworked environment also opens extra side streets for an egg-hunt layout, giving areas outside the racing line a purpose.

Why this update is worth watching

Remasters and long-term updates often emphasize resolution, effects and asset density. Candela City suggests a more durable approach: keep the recognizable place, then rethink how players move through it. The park, arch, start line, boulevard crossings and recovery-friendly barriers all change the rhythm of a lap.

For players, the practical takeaway is simple. Expect the familiar city theme, but do not assume old lines will transfer unchanged. For preservation-minded fans, the rework also makes version history more interesting. The 0.9.3 debut, the current 1.5 track and the eventual Evolution version document three different answers to the same course-design problem.
