Xbox is testing a cleaner answer to a question achievement hunters have argued about for years: when is a game actually complete? Mythic Achievements give one permanent status marker for finishing a game's original achievement list. The DLC pile does not get to move the finish line after you already crossed it.
The feature entered Xbox Insider testing on September 29, 2026. It is still an Insider feature, so do not assume every console or profile has it yet. Xbox did not give a general-release date in that announcement.
What counts as Mythic
Xbox's rule is refreshingly specific. Earn every achievement in the game's original list and that title receives Mythic status. Achievements added later through DLC or updates are excluded from the requirement. Once awarded, the status stays with the profile.
That distinction fixes a familiar annoyance. A player can finish a launch list, see 100 percent for a while, then watch an expansion add new achievements and push the total backward. Mythic treats the base game's original list as a stable target. Add-on achievements still exist, but they no longer rewrite the fact that the original job was finished.

Eligible old completions count too
Xbox says eligible games completed in the past can receive Mythic status retroactively, including Xbox 360 titles. That matters more than a shiny new badge suggests. Achievement history on Xbox stretches across several console generations, and completion hunters should not have to repeat a 2008 campaign because the interface learned a new trick in 2026.
A new Gaming tab on the profile collects achievement history, Gamerscore milestones and completed games. Mythic titles receive a special frame, and friends can see which games have earned the status. A progress bar also shows how close a game is to Mythic while letting players focus on the remaining original achievements.

Mythic is about recognition, not extra game content
Mythic status does not unlock DLC, add a physical collectible, or turn an incomplete edition into a complete one. It is profile recognition for the original achievement set. The screenshots use Gears of War: E-Day artwork as the interface example, but the announcement says the system also reaches backward to eligible Xbox 360 completions.
That makes this update unusually friendly to older libraries. Your original discs still need compatible hardware or backward compatibility, and any online achievement can still depend on the game and service remaining available. Mythic does not repair a closed server. It simply stops optional later content from changing the base-game finish line.
The practical collector angle
If the update sends you back through the series, Zypher currently has physical listings for Gears of War on Xbox 360, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3 and Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on Xbox One. Check the live product page for stock, platform, condition and included discs before ordering.
Want to rebuild an achievement-era shelf or clear room for the next completion project? Browse Zypher's Xbox 360 collection, then check the Zypher Buy List when an exact title is eligible. A backlog will never truly be finished, but at least Xbox is giving the completed part better paperwork.
